Filing Deadline Date June 15th for Expats

14 Apr

If you live outside of the United States you do not have to file by April 17 as you have an automatic two month extension. This is not new and has been in existence in the rule books for as long as I can remember. If you owe money to the IRS, this must be paid by April 18th just like all other American citizens and if you don’t pay, you will owe interest and perhaps, have to pay a small fine.

The relevant portion of the FAQ to which I have placed a link above is, “If you are a United States citizen or resident alien, who is either: (1) living outside of the United States and Puerto Rico and your main place of business or post of duty is outside of the United States and Puerto Rico; or (2) in military or naval services on duty outside of the United States and Puerto Rico on the due date of your return, you are allowed an automatic 2-month extension until June 15 to file your return and pay any tax due. For additional information refer to Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad. If you use this automatic 2-month extension, you must attach a statement to your return explaining which of the two situations qualify you for the extension.”

NOTE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO APPLY FOR THIS EXTENSION AND YOU AUTOMATICALLY HAVE UNTIL JUNE 15th
